International Resource Connect (IRC) is a recruitment agency which delivers workforce solutions to companies of all sizes, fostering win-win relationships with their clients by helping them align the right people to their business needs. This week we met with their Founder and Managing Director, Izelle Roos.
Q: How would you be introduced by a close friend at a social event? i.e. Name, age, company, title, interesting fact etc.
A: Izelle is 37 years old, with a high dedication to ensure the success of IRC. She has an extremely high sense of urgency, which definitely contributed to her success in the recruitment space. She has a positive energy and outlook on life, which she uses to deal with challenges that come across her life.
Q: Tell us something that not many others know about you. This could be anything related to your family, children, their achievements, hobbies, interests etc.
A: I have been thrown with many curveballs through my career, and despite what came my way, I always come out at the top. I have a devoted husband, and two lovely daughters aged 2 and 6. After my career in IT, I moved into Real Estate, where I made a huge success as an Estate Agent. Till this day, I still hold the record for the highest sales as the rooky of the year.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you want to get away from it all?
A: I watch any of the CSI’s, or NCIS, Criminal Minds, Dexter, Big Bang Theory, Heroes or a really good thriller. Last one I saw was Columbus Circle. Nothing but the truth is also a good movie. I can recommend both movies.
Q: Which book had the biggest impact on you and why?
A: Think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill. I personally believe that Napoleon Hill captured the secret to being successful in life, professionally and personally in this book. He has personally interviewed over 500 of the most affluent men and women of his time. The book was first published in 1937 and is still very relevant today.
Q: Who is/has been the most important mentor in your life and why?
A: My parents taught me to never give up and find a stable job Unfortunately there is no job security anywhere any longer.
Audrey Wesseloo – who taught me about passive income and that a fat salary doesn’t make you rich. By watching a successful career woman like Audrey, I realised that you only need to focus on the 20% that will guarantee you 80% results, opening up your time to focus on more important things. The same principle is applied within IRC today.
Q: If you could invite any three South Africans to a dinner party, who would you invite?
A: My husband and 2 children, Danica (6) and Bianca (2). I feel that most of my time is spent at work and not with them, and even when I’m at home, I’m either working or busy with something else. I give a lot of my time and energy to the company and sometimes I feel that I only give what is left of me at the end of the day to my support structure.
Q: Which gadgets do you personally use on a day-to-day basis and if you had to pick a single gadget you could not live without, which would it be?
A: Laptop, tablet and Bold 9790. I even take my Bold to the bathroom, so I guess I’d say I can’t live without that one. I LOVE gadgets. I love android software!
ABOUT INTERNATIONAL RESOURCE CONNECT (IRC)
Q: When was International Resource Connect founded?
A: January 2008.
Q: What do you specialise in?
A: Our combined recruitment experience is 15 years.
IRC has always focused on the IT Industry and when the company started it had a strong focus of specialisation in CRM and ERP system areas. From there we expanded to various other areas and although IT is our main focus, we also have the capability to assist our clients with other requirements such as Bookkeepers, Admin Staff, Sales individuals, etc.
IRC has two very strong arms, which leads them out into the Infrastructure & Support and Development areas – focused on Developers (.Net, Java, Delphi, etc) and Infrastructure and Business Process areas focused on anything from Junior Technical support to Service Managers to CIO’s etc.
One thing everyone needs to know about IRC is that we pride ourselves in finding a complete match for your organization – it is really important for us to understand your requirements with regards to the position, but we also need to understand our client’s culture and the type of people they need. We want to add value to any individual’s life, whether it’s a company or a candidate.
Q: How do you find and retain a great team of employees?
A: I created an entrepreneurial environment for my team where they can thrive and build a business within my business and expand to earn passive income. Finding a good team is hard. In an interview you can only learn so much about a person, and normally people have a tendency to tell you what you want to hear. For me it is important to listen to what they are not telling me.
The 1st 2 weeks is the most crucial to me. Within 2 weeks my team and I can see if a person is going to survive the pressure of a sales environment, where you deal with rejection 90% of the day.
People that DON’T do well in IRC are people that are looking for a 08:00 – 17:00 job. Recruitment is not a job; it is a passion and a hunger for success.
Q: What has been the single biggest reason for your success?
A: I would say integrity and honesty. I am open-minded and will always see both sides. IRC customises solutions for each client. IRC is not a fly-by-night; we are here to assist with a need and to fit both the skill and the culture. We can pride ourselves by saying that our top talent stays on average 3 years with a company. I have a passion for what I do, I love helping people, advising them and guiding them. The secret is not to sell to people, but rather to get them to buy from you.
My girls are taught and understand the business from a management perspective as well as from a candidate perspective.
Single biggest reason for success – NEVER GIVING UP!!!
Q: What relationship building tips do you have for other business owners?
A: I can really recommend reading Napoleon Hill’s books.
- There is no such thing as an overnight success.
- Know your customers, what are their hobbies, their interests, children, anniversaries, their birthdays, what is in it for them? Why are they in business? Get under their skin and become their trusted advisor. Relationships cannot be built via email; you didn’t marry your spouse via email?
- As the owner of the business, take ownership for mistakes that your co-workers make, don’t judge and scold them, help them find a solution for the immediate problem at hand and sort it out. Take appropriate action afterwards. Your clients must know your cell phone number and your email address.
- Don’t over commit and under deliver.
- In sales (I suppose in any business) there are 3 rules.
- The customer is always right
- If the customer is wrong
- Review rule one
Sometimes you have to lose a battle to win a war.
Any additional comments you’d like to provide:
A: Some of my greatest disappointments were people. I used to measure people according to my own standards, going in with an expectation and expecting a certain result. When I did not get that result, I would feel terrible and done in, so now I go in realistic, without any expectation, then I cannot be disappointed.
As every other business owner, I am here to make a profit and not to merely provide jobs to people. I surround myself with people that have the same mindset. I expect my team to function as business owners. That way they can provide a quality service to Clients and not merely provide a resource. This is the single key thing that sets us apart from any other recruitment company. We are here to ensure we provide you with Top Talent that will help your company grow. That way, we ensure that we always have a source of income, as your trusted advisor, providing you with top talent, keeping you up to date with market trends and assisting when problems arise.
IRC also offer various other value added services for smaller companies that cannot afford recruitment fees. Please contact me directly to discuss.
